Disciples of Jesus: Walking in the Power, Purpose, and Presence of God

One of the greatest truths I’ve discovered over the years is that God never intended the Christian life to be lived in our own strength. Too often we struggle, become discouraged, or settle for far less than what God has promised—not because He has withheld anything from us, but because we haven’t fully discovered what He has already placed within us through the Holy Spirit.
The Bible tells us in Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…” That word “power” speaks of God’s supernatural ability working through ordinary people like you and me. The same Holy Spirit who empowered the early believers is still at work today, guiding us, strengthening us, comforting us, and enabling us to live for Christ every day.
In each episode of Pastor Vic’s Nuggets, we’ll open God’s Word together, discover practical biblical truths, and learn how to apply them to everyday life. My goal isn’t simply to give you more information. My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will use these moments to deepen your faith, strengthen your walk, and remind you that God is faithful to every one of His promises.
So, wherever you are today, quiet your heart for the next few minutes. If you have your Bible nearby, that’s wonderful. If not, simply listen and allow God’s Word to speak to you.

Here We Go…
Some Christians believe that signs, wonders, and miracles ended with the early Apostles. However, Scripture repeatedly teaches that God does not change. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”) If God healed, delivered, and transformed lives in the New Testament, then His power is still available today.
Salvation changes the human spirit instantly, but spiritual maturity develops over time. As believers study Scripture and learn to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, they grow step by step into maturity in Christ.
Maturity Is a Process
Every believer progresses through stages of spiritual growth. A person may begin as a new convert, then become a committed follower of Jesus, and eventually mature into a disciple who actively ministers to others. 1 John 2:12–14 describes spiritual development from children to young men to fathers.
- “12 I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.
- 13 I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.
- 14 I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one.”
God’s desire is that believers mature and rightly handle the Word of Truth. Just as a child must learn to walk before learning to run, believers grow spiritually over time. Spiritual maturity develops through prayer, obedience, study of God’s Word, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
There is a tremendous difference between knowing Scripture and obeying Scripture. The Pharisees of Jesus’ day knew the Law intellectually, yet many failed to apply it in their lives (John 5:39-40, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life”). Jesus rebuked them because their outward religion lacked inward transformation.
Jesus taught in the Parable of the Two Builders found in Matthew 7:24–27 that the wise man both hears His words and obeys them. Knowledge alone is not enough. True wisdom is knowledge applied through obedience. (Matthew 7:24-27 24, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
Believers are not called to remain spiritual children. They are called to become disciples—fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ who glorify God through their words, actions, and testimony. When Jesus walked the earth, He called disciples to follow Him closely. The twelve Apostles were entrusted with authority to preach, heal, and minister in His name. In Luke 10, Jesus also sent out seventy disciples who returned rejoicing because even demons were subject to them through the authority of Jesus’ name. Jesus reminded them, however, that the greatest miracle was not power over demons but salvation itself: “Rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:17-20, “Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Before going to the Cross, Jesus prayed a remarkable prayer recorded in John 17. First, He prayed for Himself as He prepared to complete His earthly mission. Then He prayed for His disciples. Finally, He prayed for future believers—including every believer today.
Jesus prayed that His followers would remain in the world but not become like the world. He prayed that they would be sanctified through truth, declaring, “Your Word is truth, John 17:17” For example, a boat is designed to be in the water, but danger comes when water enters the boat. Likewise, believers live in the world but must guard against allowing the world’s values to control their hearts.
Jesus also prayed for unity among believers so that the world would recognize the reality of God through their love and unity. Believers are no longer merely citizens of this world. Through salvation, they become citizens of the Kingdom of God (Philippians 3:20). Heaven’s authority, promises, and spiritual resources become available through Christ.
Throughout Scripture, signs and wonders pointed people toward God. Jesus healed the blind, cleansed lepers, raised the dead, and delivered the oppressed to demonstrate that He truly was the Son of God. Road signs are not the destination; they point travelers toward the destination. Likewise, miracles are not meant to glorify people. They are meant to point people toward Jesus Christ.
As disciples of Jesus today, believers are still called to minister to hurting people, pray for the sick, proclaim the Gospel, and demonstrate the love and power of God. Mark 16:15–18 records Jesus’ command to preach the Gospel to all creation. Jesus declared that signs would follow those who believe. These signs were never intended to glorify individuals but to confirm the reality of the Gospel message.
As disciples of Christ, believers possess two powerful resources: the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. Together they bring truth, healing, conviction, restoration, and hope to a broken world. A Dove requires two wings to fly properly. In the same way, believers need both the truth of God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit operating together in balance.
Jesus remains the ultimate example for every believer. He only spoke what the Father revealed and only did what the Father directed Him to do. Believers are called to follow that same pattern by spending time in prayer, studying Scripture, and remaining sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. When believers walk in obedience, humility, love, and faith, God works through them to touch lives, reveal His glory, and draw people to salvation through Jesus Christ.
The call to discipleship is not merely a call to attend church services or gain biblical knowledge. It is a call to follow Jesus completely, to walk in His truth, to depend upon His Spirit, and to become vessels through whom God reveals His love and power to the world.
The Cost of True Discipleship
Jesus never presented discipleship as an easy path. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus made it clear that following Him requires surrender, sacrifice, and commitment. In Luke 9:23, Jesus declared, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Modern Christianity sometimes emphasizes comfort while neglecting commitment. Yet Jesus consistently taught that discipleship requires believers to place Him above every other priority.
The Importance of Prayer
One of the defining characteristics of Jesus’ earthly ministry was His commitment to prayer. Again and again, the Gospels reveal Jesus withdrawing to pray and spend time with the Father. If Jesus, the Son of God, depended upon prayer during His earthly ministry, how much more should believers depend upon prayer today? Prayer is not merely a religious duty; it is the lifeline of a disciple. Prayer strengthens faith, sharpens spiritual discernment, brings peace during trials, and deepens intimacy with God.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is not merely a force or influence; He is the active presence of God dwelling within believers. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would comfort, teach, guide, convict, and empower His followers. Without the Holy Spirit, discipleship becomes mere human effort. With the Holy Spirit, believers receive supernatural strength to live according to God’s will.
Galatians 5:22 reminds believers that the fruit of the Spirit includes, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” These qualities reflect the character of Christ developing within believers. Electricity cannot be seen directly, yet its power is evident through the light it produces. Likewise, the Holy Spirit’s presence becomes visible through transformed lives, godly character, and spiritual power.
Spiritual Warfare
Every disciple must recognize that spiritual warfare is real. Scripture teaches that believers wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12-13, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”).
Satan opposes the work of God and seeks to discourage, deceive, tempt, and distract believers from fulfilling their calling. However, believers do not fight for victory; they fight from victory because Jesus has already overcome the powers of darkness through the Cross and Resurrection. Ephesians 6 instructs believers to put on the whole armor of God, including truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer. A soldier entering battle without armor would be vulnerable to attack. In the same way, believers who neglect prayer, Scripture, and spiritual discipline leave themselves spiritually exposed. (Ephesians 6:14-18, “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,”)
The Refiner’s Fire
“An old illustration tells of a goldsmith who said he knew the gold was pure when he could see his reflection in it. Whether or not every ancient refiner used this exact method, the illustration beautifully captures the biblical truth that God uses trials to shape us into the image of Christ.”
Imagine visiting an old goldsmith’s workshop. In the center of the room sits a blazing furnace. A lump of gold ore is placed into a crucible and lowered into the fire. As the heat rises, something unexpected happens. The gold doesn’t disappear—it begins to change. Dark impurities, called dross, slowly rise to the surface. The refiner doesn’t walk away. He doesn’t become distracted. He sits beside the fire, watching carefully. He knows that too little heat won’t remove the impurities, and too much heat could damage the gold. Every moment is under his watchful eye. As the dross rises, he gently skims it away. Again and again, he repeats the process. Finally, someone asks, “How do you know when the gold is pure?” The old craftsman smiles and replies, “When I can clearly see my own reflection in it.”
That is a beautiful picture of God’s work in our lives. None of us enjoys the heat of trials. We pray for God to remove the furnace, while God is often using the furnace to remove what doesn’t belong in us. Pride, fear, self-reliance, bitterness, and misplaced affections often remain hidden until the pressure of life brings them to the surface. God is never trying to destroy us. He is refining us.
Every hardship is measured by His wisdom. Every trial has a purpose. Every season of testing is designed to make us more like Jesus Christ. When we wonder why life has become so difficult, we should remember that the Refiner has not abandoned His seat beside the fire. His hand is still on the process. His eyes are still on His children. One day, when His work is complete, His character will be reflected in us. Others will see Christ in our patience, our humility, our love, our faith, and our hope.
The fire was never the goal. Christlikeness was.
So when you find yourself in the furnace, don’t only ask, “Lord, how can I escape this?” Instead ask, “Lord, what are You refining in me? Remove the dross until Your image is clearly seen in my life.” The greatest testimony of a believer is not a life that has never been through the fire, but a life that shines because it has.
As I close today here are some scripture verses to look up and meditate on:
- Malachi 3:3: “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver…”
- Job 23:10: “…When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.”
- James 1:2–4: “…the testing of your faith produces patience…”
- 1 Peter 1:6–7: “…the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold…”
Lord Jesus, help us to be faithful disciples who love You, obey You, and follow You wholeheartedly. Empower us by Your Spirit to live for Your glory and to lead others to You. Amen.
